Meet Liz de Byl, Head of Humanities & Social Sciences
We are excited to introduce Elizabeth (Liz) de Byl, our passionate Head of Humanities & Social Sciences. Liz’s inspiring journey and love for humanities bring a unique energy to our College, sparking curiosity and compassion in her students. Here is a closer look at her career, her passion for teaching, and her life beyond the classroom.
A Diverse Career in Education and Beyond
Before joining Santa Maria College, Liz held the role of 21st Century Learning Coordinator (K-12) at another school. In this position, she designed and delivered innovative professional development for teachers, focusing on crafting learning experiences that would equip students with essential skills for the future. “My work with teachers gave students unique opportunities to develop skills they’ll carry throughout life,” she shares. Her background also includes time at an all-girls school in Melbourne, where she helped foster a love for learning in young women.
Liz’s first taste of teaching came unexpectedly when she instructed an adult ballet course at the UWA Sports and Recreation Association. As a university student, she loved the experience of crafting lessons and creating choreography to challenge her students. “Seeing their growth with each class was incredibly rewarding,” she recalls. This early experience was pivotal, showing her just how impactful teaching could be and igniting her passion for education.
A Lifelong Fascination with Humanities and History
Liz has always been captivated by people’s stories and believes deeply in the power of shared human experience. Before stepping into education, she worked behind the scenes in film and television, where she explored the human condition through storytelling. “This experience enriched my interest in history and humanities because it’s all about understanding who we are and how we came to be,” Liz explains. It is this very curiosity about our world that she brings into her HASS classes at Santa Maria.
She emphasises that humanities goes beyond academics, engaging both mind and heart to foster critical and compassionate thinkers. “Our students learn about history, geography, economics, politics, and law – giving them the insight to understand their world and the power to shape it,” Liz notes. One of her most rewarding moments as a teacher is watching her students ask questions about the world and discover their own potential to create positive change.
Life Beyond the Classroom
Outside of school, Liz’s life is filled with hobbies that help her unwind and recharge. She enjoys spending quality time with her family, especially in nature, and loves hosting gatherings for family and friends. “I’m a big fan of reading, socialising, home design, music, travelling, and camping,” she shares. These activities keep her grounded and connected, bringing balance to her busy life as an educator.
Time Travel Dreams: Which Era Would She Choose?
When asked which historical period she would visit, Liz found it hard to choose. Teaching history, from Ancient Greece to World War II and beyond, has given her a deep appreciation for the progress humanity has made. “Exploring the past gives me a genuine sense of gratitude for living in 2024,” Liz says. Despite the challenges we face today, history has instilled in her a positive perspective on our current era.
Liz’s journey, insights, and commitment to Humanities & Social Sciences inspire our students daily. Her belief in the power of understanding our world, paired with her dedication to nurturing future leaders, is a true gift to our community.
Thank you, Liz, for all that you do!
