HOSPITALITY
Fatima Horta | Staff Member | 2024 Mercy Award Winner
Fatima’s nearly 50 years at Santa Maria College is a testament to her unwavering dedication to our Mercy community. From her early mornings in the catering team to her meticulous care of our College Chapel, Fatima’s work reflects her deep commitment to community and to her faith. Her service and delicious baking have led to her becoming a significant person in the life of the school and a cherished member of the Santa Maria family.
Veronique Heekeng | Staff Member
For 15 years, Veronique has been a great example of hospitality at Santa Maria College. Known for her generous spirit, Veronique brings joy to those around her, whether she is preparing meals for Homelessness We Care or baking treats for hospital celebrations. Her dedication extends to supporting Ukrainian refugees and contributing to the school community with her culinary talents. Veronique’s generous actions create lasting connections, embodying the true essence of hospitality.
Elizabeth Wilkes | Alumni, Class of 1984
Elizabeth has played a crucial role in fostering a sense of community through her extensive volunteer work. Over many years as a dedicated parent and volunteer, Elizabeth significantly contributed to the Parent Network, Parent Council, and College Advisory Board. Her leadership as Chair of the Parent Council and the College Advisory Board has been instrumental in building a supportive and connected school community. Elizabeth’s commitment to service, her ability to welcome new families, her exceptional leadership skills, and her ability to bring people together truly embody the value of hospitality.
COMPASSION
Jennifer Jansen | Staff Member
Jennifer’s compassion shines through her everyday actions at Santa Maria College. Known for her kindness and support, Jennifer goes beyond her duties to ensure the wellbeing of students and staff alike. Her inclusive approach fosters a nurturing environment where everyone feels valued and cared for, making her an inspirational empathetic figure of compassion within the school.
Laurissa Knowles | Alumni, Class of 1993
Laurissa, a dedicated counsellor and chaplain, has made a significant impact at St Thomas More Catholic Primary School. Her compassionate support helps students navigate personal challenges, promoting mental health and inclusivity. Laurissa’s work as a chaplain has seen her show great compassion for those facing trauma or the grief of the loss of loved ones. Laurissa’s spiritual guidance and leadership highlight her deep commitment to fostering a supportive community.
Lee Lester | Alumni, Class of 1991
Lee embodies dedication and selflessness through her profound impact on Perth’s disadvantaged children.
A special needs education assistant and foster carer, Lee transforms her home into a sanctuary for children in crisis, providing unwavering care and stability. Her extraordinary commitment to nurturing vulnerable children indicates her strong sense of compassion and desire to make a difference in the lives of young people.
Due to personal circumstances, Lee was unable to participate in the portrait photoshoot. Nonetheless, her contributions are greatly recognised and appreciated.
JUSTICE
Sister Breda O’Reilly | Staff Member
For over a decade, Sister Breda has championed justice through her volunteer work at the Edmund Rice Centre. Teaching English to refugees and asylum seekers, she tirelessly promotes fairness and equity for marginalised groups. Sister Breda’s dedication embodies the Mercy Value of Justice, inspiring all who know her to strive for a more just society.
Joanne Priest | Staff Member
Joanne’s passion for the environment is evident in her work at Santa Maria College. Leading the Eco Sisters program, Joanne encourages students to care for the planet and make a positive impact. Her dedication to environmental education fosters a love and appreciation for nature, inspiring students to become advocates for change.
SERVICE
Roslind Witham | Alumni Class of 1987 | Mercy Award Winner
Roslind has dedicated her life to advocating for road safety and supporting individuals with disabilities following her own experience of road trauma. Despite facing significant personal challenges, her courageous public speaking and community outreach efforts underscore her resilience and determination to make a positive difference.
Diann Black | Alumni, Class of 1982
Diann transitioned from fashion design to a remarkable nursing career, reflecting her deep commitment to service. As NT Director for the Australian Pain Society, Diann’s expertise and humanitarian efforts, including missions to Guatemala, highlight her dedication to healthcare. Her innovative contributions and compassionate care make her an inspiring figure in the field.
Emily Daniels | Alumni, Class of 2014
Emily’s nursing and humanitarian work exemplify the Mercy Value of Service. From volunteering on Mercy Ships in Sierra Leone to working in Scotland during COVID-19, Emily’s unwavering commitment to helping others is truly inspirational. Her compassionate care and positive influence make a profound difference in the lives she touches.
Geraldine Doogue | Alumni Class of 1968
Geraldine is a distinguished journalist and broadcaster renowned for her commitment to social change and public awareness. Awarded an AO in 2003 for her service to the community and media, Geraldine’s career highlights include hosting ABC Compass from 1998 to 2017. Geraldine’s extensive volunteer work and published works underscore her dedication to giving back to the community.
Gwendolyn Wood | Alumni Class of 1963
Gwen is a dedicated individual recognised for her exceptional service to Santa Maria College and its alumni. Instrumental in co-founding the Old Girls Association in 1990, Gwen has served as president and treasurer, playing a pivotal role in reconnecting alumni and establishing annual events. Her leadership and dedication have significantly supported the school community and included community service initiatives, such as aiding the homeless. Gwen’s leadership and dedication embody the spirit of service.
Helen Chaffer | Past Staff Member
Helen is recognised for her profound impact on Santa Maria College over many years of dedicated service. Her compassionate leadership and commitment to fostering inclusivity and care have touched countless lives within and beyond the College. Her dedication to building community and living the Mercy values are Helen’s legacy.
John Wray | Staff Member
John has been a dedicated member of the Santa Maria College community since 2001, serving in various roles, including Head of Mathematics and Campus Dean. His commitment to mentoring staff and creating a welcoming environment for students has been a hallmark of his service. His dedication to solving problems, timetabling and supporting others has been unwavering. John’s passion for teaching continues to inspire and positively impact the lives of students at Santa Maria College.

Sisterhood Networking Series – An Evening with Sandra Boyle
We hosted an inspiring Sisterhood Networking Session with Sandra Boyle, a pioneer in mediation and negotiation. Sandra shared her incredible journey from one of few women in a law cohort to becoming a leading figure in Australian law. The evening was filled with invaluable insights, camaraderie, and inspiration.

The annual Golden Girls’ Luncheon is set for 7 November 2024 at Santa Maria College! A special event for alumnae who graduated in 1974 or earlier, it’s a day to reconnect, laugh, and relive cherished memories.
