Moments That Matter – The 2025 Mother Daughter Breakfast
It is often the quiet moments that stay with us – words unspoken, a knowing smile, a warm hand held across a breakfast table. On Sunday morning, our Year 12 students, their mothers and other significant women, gathered for one of Santa Maria College’s most treasured traditions: the Mother Daughter Breakfast.
Held at Fraser’s Restaurant in Kings Park, with the city skyline stretched beneath us, the breakfast was filled with laughter, happy tears and a sense of something deeply special. For many, it was a pause in the busyness of Year 12, a chance to reconnect and reflect before the final term begins.
A Morning of Meaning
From the moment families arrived, there was a gentle hum of connection. There was a shared sense of pride between students and the women who had supported them through the years. As breakfast was served, the room quickly filled with warmth. It came not just from the food or the winter sunshine, but from the genuine affection shared across every table.
One of the most touching moments of the morning came as students handed their special guest a letter. These letters were carefully written, beautifully honest, and often surprisingly funny. There were giggles, tears, and many long, quiet hugs.
Lessons From a Life Well-Lived
Guest speaker Sandy Anghie (Class of 1991) captivated the room with stories from her own journey.
An architect, writer and passionate advocate for Perth’s future, Sandy gave her insights into ten key lessons she has learned since leaving Santa Maria 34 years ago. These included not letting others define you, being present, not being afraid to change direction, supporting other women and the importance of building and partaking in community.
Her reflections were deeply resonant. They encouraged our students to stay curious, open-hearted and brave as they step into the next chapter of their lives.
Music, Memories and Meaningful Moments
The morning also included a stunning performance by four of our Year 12 music students: Tess, Amelia, Annabel and Tess. Their song spoke directly to the heart. It was the kind of performance that filled the space with feeling.
And although the letters may have been the highlight, the quiet conversations between students and their guests – between courses, on the terrace, walking to the car – were equally powerful. These are the moments that will be remembered long after graduation.
In Their Words
Dean of Year 12, Lisa Taylor, shared, “The morning was a celebration of the wonderful women in our Year 12s’ lives who unconditionally support and love them. They are the shoulder to cry on, the voice of reason, the ever-reliable Uber drivers, the firefighters of emotional emergencies, and sometimes even the impromptu stylists, therapists, and cheerleaders. It meant a lot to share the morning together and say thank you.”
Year 12, Deputy Head Boarder Clancy shared, “Sunday morning’s breakfast was so special. Having Mum there meant the world to me. Mun drove four hours to spend that time together. The breakfast was a great way to show my appreciation for her.”
Year 12 mum, Belinda, shared, “It was so lovely to pause and share some quality time with my daughter, alongside other mums and their daughters, in the middle of such a big year. Fraser’s was a beautiful setting for the event, and Casey’s framed photo and letter were thoughtful touches that made the morning feel extra special.”
The Heart of Santa Maria
Events such as the Mother Daughter Breakfast are an opportunity to celebrate the relationships that shape us. They remind us to pause, to give thanks, and to honour the journey that has brought each girl to this point.
To all the mothers and special guests who joined us, thank you. Thank you for the early mornings, the late-night conversations, the quiet encouragement and the unwavering love that has carried your daughters to this moment. And to our Year 12 students, may you carry the memory of this morning with you always, as you step forward with grace, strength and gratitude.
