Music, Magic & Memorable Moments – 2025 Ensemble Concert
The McDonald Building was buzzing with excitement as 130 of our music students from Years 5–12 took to the stage for this year’s Ensemble Concert. With almost 300 people in the audience, it was a full house, and the energy was electric from the first note.
The concert marked the end of 12 weeks of hard work and rehearsals, and it showed. But what made it even more special? For many of our young musicians, this was their first time performing in an ensemble. It was a night full of bravery, celebration, and a whole lot of talent.
“I really enjoyed this year’s ensemble concert and being part of the McMahon Orchestra. It gave me a leadership role, which helped further my music skills. It was fun to play with the younger girls and listen to what the other ensembles had worked on to perform. It was nice to work towards a show, then enjoy the thrill of performing on the night!” Adayna, Year 10
Something for Everyone
The program was packed with variety, from pop favourites and film scores to beautiful classical pieces. There truly was something for everyone, and every performance brought a fresh energy to the stage.
Here’s a glimpse of the ensembles who performed:
- McMahon String Ensemble – Violin and cello students from Years 5 – 10, directed by Jenny Cowley.
- Junior Guitar Ensemble – Formed in 2023 and led by Natalie Ripepi, featuring Years 5 and 6 students, some performing for the very first time.
- Flute Choir – Led by our dedicated flute tutor, Rebecca McGregor, with students from Years 7 – 12.
- String Orchestra – Students from Years 8 – 12, directed by Paul Kinsella.
- Guitar Ensemble – A Santa Maria favourite since 2015, now including vocals and open to students from Years 7 – 12.
- McAuley Concert Band – Wind, brass and percussion students from Years 5 – 10.
- Senior Concert Band – Featuring musicians from Years 7 – 12.
- Swing Band – A vibrant closing act, performed by students from Years 10 – 12.
“The Ensemble Concert is always a highlight of my year, as I get to listen to a variety of incredible tunes, from melodic ballads to the upbeat songs that make you want to sing and dance. It means a lot to me as I get to participate and play these tunes with my peers!” Isla, Year 8

More Than Music
Beyond the instruments and applause, what stood out most was the sense of community. Students cheered each other on backstage, tuned instruments for one another, and supported those experiencing first-performance nerves. It was everything we love about music at Santa Maria, confidence, collaboration, creativity, and the Mercy value of Excellence shining through.
“The ensemble concert means celebrating the progress we’ve made and enjoying the feeling of belonging and accomplishment from being in a group. It’s also about supporting and uplifting all the other girls for their performances. Music spreads joy everywhere, and the good feelings that come from the concert are contagious!” Abby, Year 9
It Takes a Village
To all the students who performed, thank you. You reminded us of the joy, resilience and connection that music brings. We can’t wait to do it all again next year.
