Drama Day at Scotch College
The Year 11 Drama Day is an initiative of the Independent Schools’ Drama Association. On Tuesday, Year 11 drama students headed to Scotch College to participate in Drama workshops with industry professionals. The focus of these workshops was movement, improvisation and text interpretation, which are all key aspects of the Drama ATAR courses.
Ruby Minervini recounts her experiences of the day:
The day started with the Year 11 Drama girls hopping on the bus with much excitement for a day full of drama! Arriving at Scotch College, we met other drama students from a variety of schools and the energetic presenters, who would be taking the classes and assisting us during this fun-filled day.
There were six workshops throughout the day and each student participating in three of these. My first workshop was Improvisation. In this workshop, I learnt how to support other actors on stage and how to fix a situation that can become difficult for an actor. After the workshop, I realised how much I love improv and that it is not something to be afraid of. My second workshop was Movement, where I learnt how to use my body to convey my character and feelings to the audience. We were required to pay close attention to detail, focusing on our posture, gait and eyeline.
The last workshop was Text Interpretation. We were all given a script to perform, but after every 10 minutes, we had to stop and focus on how we could make it better. We focused on finding the purpose behind the extract, to make a reason behind our emotion and to find a connection between the characters.
By the end of the day, I was exhausted from being so focused and active throughout the day, but extremely happy.
The day was an amazing experience and we were so blessed to be able to work with new and talented people, particularly boys, which is not a regular experience for us Santa girls. We had wonderful experiences and gained so much knowledge that we can take into our drama course and made a few new friendships.
