A number of Santa Maria College students have been challenging themselves, achieving goals and reaching out into the wider community, as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award offered through the College. The Award is an international program available to anyone between the ages of 14 and 25 years and aims to empower participants to explore their full potential, regardless of their background, location or circumstances. There have so far been over 8 million young participants worldwide.

Participants set their own challenges and goals within four different sections; service, skill, physical recreation and adventurous journey. Each encouraging persistence and determination to overcome any issues or setbacks they may encounter along the way.

Year 10 student, Olivia von Bertouch has been involved in the program since mid-last year and is currently working towards her Silver Award.

‘For the service component, I have helped out the non-for profit organisation Wheelchairs for Kids, through the school service program, making bags for the backs of wheelchairs for kids in developing countries. For sport, I included dance rehearsals, as I belong to Dance Central’s Performance Group 7 where we represent our school at competitions. For the skills section I chose music, as I belong to the school’s Swing Band, Concert Band and Years 9/10 Choir’.

She believes the program is a great way to set goals and work towards them, whilst building upon strength, resilience and commitment.

In WA, the Award is an endorsed program with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority and can be counted towards upper school students’ achievement of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). It also encourages the development of valuable practical skills, behaviours and attitudes which will assist participants in later endeavours such as employment and higher education.

Santa Maria College currently has 42 students from Years 9 –12 working towards their bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
