Ethiopian Ambassador visits Santa Maria College to say thank you
Santa Maria College was delighted to welcome Ethiopian Ambassador, Her Excellency, Mrs Tirfu Kidanemariam, and Minister Council, Mr Jemal Beker to the College earlier this week. The Ambassador was at the College to say thank you for the ongoing support the College provides to The School of St Yared.
Santa Maria has been a supporter of The School of St Yared in Addis Abab, the capital of Ethiopia since 2011. The involvement came from Santa Maria’s Head of Drama and Dance, Amanda Huxtable visiting the school. Touched by this experience, Amanda became actively involved helping them with their financial management, staffing, curriculum, teacher training, and governance.
Shanice D’Silva (Year 9), for her Explore8 project last year, orchestrated fundraising of $200 and then purchased 50 pencil cases and enough stationary so that each contained 2 – 3 pens, 2-3 pencils, sharpener, ruler and 1 – 2 highlighters. The School of St Yared received these packs at the end of last year.
The School of St Yared’s philosophy is ‘fighting poverty through education’.
