Sport provides our girls with the opportunity to work together towards a common goal.  It allows them to make lasting friendships, develop communication skills, feel a sense of community, and learn to respect their teammates and coaches. Sport provides girls with leadership opportunities through coaching, umpiring and playing. It is also an essential factor in maintaining positive mental health.

When I was at school, I played netball, tennis and softball. Centre was my favourite position, and I played until about three years ago. I loved playing competitive sport, being part of a team, being outdoors, and having the opportunity to meet students or see my friends from other schools. I, like many of our alumni, participated in the ACC (Associated & Catholic Colleges) competition.

Girls at Santa Maria College today play in the IGSSA (WA) Competition which offers many sports highlighted in the table below.

I asked our Sports captain Keely Hebiton about why she plays IGSSA sport and which sports she participates in.

Throughout my time at Santa, I have been involved in IGSSA Swimming, Athletics, Cross-Country and Hockey. I have continued to participate each year as I love the team environment, which offers the opportunity to work cooperatively with peers of similar hobby interests, as well as the lively sporting spirit amongst IGSSA schools, creating great competition.

Who are the eight girls schools that make up this competition?

In response to a recent review and vote, by the IGSSA (WA) Executive, the following changes will be made for IGSSA (WA) Senior School match days in 2020 and beyond.

IGSSA (WA) Senior School match days will now move from Wednesday afternoons to Thursday afternoons.

What are the benefits of this Change?

  • Enable the expansion of the Years 7/8 competition. Students will have further access to available facilities and a greater capacity for additional student participation can be achieved.
  • The change will also provide consistency with match days from Year 9 onwards. All Junior (Years 9 & 10) and Senior (Years 11 & 12) teams will now play their matches on a Thursday.
  • Junior and Senior students now have the opportunity to coach and/or umpire Years 7 and 8 teams, thus providing further development potential.

IGSSA Match Days 2020 and beyond

  • Years 7 & 8                              Wednesday afternoon
  • Junior: Years 9 & 10              Thursday afternoon
  • Senior: Years 11 & 12             Thursday afternoon

I encourage every student to try some IGSSA sports; there are so many options and so much fun to be had!
