Interhouse Academic Triathlon
The Academic Triathlon is an exciting interhouse event, where teams of intellectual heavyweights from each Homeroom battle it out against other Houses for the coveted title of the ‘Smartest House in the School’.
This event showcases the academic talents of students. Academic Captains work with subject teachers and the Year 11 leaders to help facilitate the Academic Triathlon.
In preparation for this event, students spent the year working tirelessly in classes, completing extra homeworking activities and practicing with in-class assessments.
There were three events held during Term 4 across three House PCTs – a spelling bee, a general knowledge quiz and maths games.
For the spelling bee, two students from each Homeroom are chosen to compete. One student participates in a short 10-word spelling test, and the other competes in a knock-out spelling bee, where students line up and are read words to spell aloud. The last one standing wins the most points. Finally, these two students also compete in a team spell event and again, the last team standing wins the most points.
For the general knowledge quiz, students work in teams of four from each Homeroom. There are four rounds of eight questions – one round from RE, one from HASS, one from Science and one from Performing Arts. The team with the highest score wins.
The last event of the academic triathlon is the maths games. Two students from each Homeroom work individually and as a team in a series of maths-based games and puzzles to score points from their House. The key to winning this event is sharp problem-solving and mental maths skills. The team with the highest score wins.
The results will be announced at the final Christmas Liturgy Assembly on Tuesday of Week 9. These final scores will go towards the 2019 McAuley Shield, along with results from interhouse sporting, performing arts and public speaking events to be held in 2019.
May the best House win!
