High Honour For Nic Keskinidis
Nic Keskinidis is an outstanding educator. He sees teaching as a craft that demands his constant attention and commitment to improvement. That shows in his daily classroom practice and in the passion he demonstrates when discussing the teaching profession.
Recently Nic was awarded the Dell Trainer Award for Teacher of the Year. The honour was bestowed by his colleagues in the Business Educators of Western Australia. (Inc) He was nominated by a colleague at Santa Maria College and recommended by the Association’s board.
The Teacher of the Year is awarded to a teacher who has made a significant contribution to the Business & Enterprise Learning Area state-wide and who has experienced significant success in his/her own right. Nic has been a member of the association’s executive committee for 10 years and is a past president. He was one of the original writers of the Business Management & Enterprise course of study as well as being a past examiner and curriculum officer.
Nic sees his biggest achievement in the association as being part of the group that revived the annual teachers’ conference. He says his aim is to ensure teachers are “well informed and well resourced” for their teaching in the year ahead.
In order to further develop his craft, Nic is studying a Masters in Clinical Teaching at Melbourne University. Clinical teaching is based on the belief that what we do in the classroom should be based on a solid research evidence base. Like doctors and other clinicians, teachers should be able to diagnose, implement and evaluate. In a school context, we are implementing learning strategies and evaluating their effectiveness.
When asked what he loves about teaching Nic says, “There is so much to learn about the science of learning. It is an endless frontier. Teaching is a true craft that you work on and refine. You will never perfect the craft but you can constantly improve. It gives you creativity, control and impact. I also love the connections you form with students and fellow teachers.”
Santa Maria College is very lucky to enjoy the talent and passion of so many great teachers and it is wonderful when they are recognised on a larger stage. Congratulations ‘Mr Kes’!
