The recent Year 7 HASS and Science excursion to Point Walter provided students with the opportunity to conduct fieldwork in their local area. Studying important Geography and Biology concepts in this practical way enhanced students’ awareness of their responsibility as stewards of our environment and really connected their learning to real life. This is what students Ally and Alessia had to say about the experience:

“Throughout the day, we were taught the importance of the Swan River, by Nearer to Nature.  We were told about pollution and what this does to the river and marine life living in the river and shown how to test the water. Overall, this was a great day and lots of learning was involved. It helped us reflect on what we had learnt in our HASS classes.” Ally Uppill

“Some activities we did were a water catchment model, site survey and water testing. The water testing tested the water on the levels of salt, turbidity, the amount of phosphates and nitrates and also the temperature. This helped us to understand more about the health of the river and what condition the water has to be in to be safe and healthy. In the water catchment model, we learnt about some of the bad things that can get into the water catchment like rubbish, fertiliser or dog poo. From this excursion, I learnt that we really need to take care of our environment around us and one lazy move, such us not putting your rubbish in the bin and littering instead, is the one move it could take to kill a dolphin.”  Alessia Cirocco
