Passing the Baton – Celebrating Student Leadership

Year 12 and Year 11 student leaders exchanging ideas during the Student Leadership Handover at Santa Maria College

At Santa Maria College, we believe that leadership is not just about titles but about making a lasting impact. This belief was exemplified during our recent Student Leadership Handover Meeting and Dinner, a cherished tradition where our Year 12 leaders pass the baton to the incoming Year 11 Student Elect Leaders, setting the stage for another year of inspiring leadership.

The Handover - A Tradition of Trust

The Handover Meeting was a powerful blend of pride, reflection, and anticipation as our Year 12 leaders came together with their Year 11 successors. This year’s handover involved the outgoing Student Leadership Executive, Boarding Councillors, House Captains, and Portfolio Captains, each passing on their wisdom and experience to those stepping into their roles.

One of the most memorable moments was the exchange between Head Girl-elect Annika Conte and current Head Girl Isabella Morrison. As they discussed the nuances of the role – from managing school-wide initiatives to being a compassionate and effective voice for their peers – it was clear that this mentoring moment was invaluable. Each leader not only shared advice and handed over essential information folders but also reflected on the lessons learned during their tenure. This peer-to-peer exchange fosters a strong sense of continuity and community within Santa Maria College.

Annika expressed her excitement for the year ahead, saying, “I am very excited to be taking on the role of Head Girl for 2025. I look forward to working with all members of the Student Leadership and Student Representative Councils and getting to know girls across all year groups. Bella has done an amazing job this year, and I hope to fill the role to the best of my abilities.”

Isabelle, reflecting on the handover, shared her own perspective: “As I handed over the role of Head Girl to Annika, I felt a mix of emotions – not because I doubt her ability, but because it made me realise that my time at Santa Maria College is coming to an end. Reflecting on my journey, I am proud of what we have achieved and excited for Annika and the new SLC to create their own impact in 2025.”

Leadership - A Legacy of Impact

At Santa Maria College, leadership is a journey of growth and influence. Our Student Leadership Program empowers young women to develop critical skills that extend far beyond their school years. By stepping into leadership roles, students practice decision-making, learn to foster teamwork and understand the importance of accountability – all within a nurturing environment that encourages them to excel.

These roles are more than just positions; they are opportunities to lead by example and inspire others. Our leaders embody the values of Santa Maria College – Hospitality, Compassion, Justice, Service, and Excellence – ensuring these principles are woven into the fabric of our school community. The leadership handover isn’t just about maintaining tradition; it’s about continuing a legacy that each leader has contributed to, leaving a positive imprint on the college.

A Celebration of Leadership

After the formal handover meeting, the celebration continued as the 2024 Student Leadership Council moved to the Community Room for a long-table dinner. This special gathering was an opportunity to thank the outgoing Year 12 leaders for their dedication. The atmosphere was one of camaraderie and celebration, with students and staff alike reflecting on the year’s achievements and looking forward to the future with excitement and optimism.

Leadership as a Lifelong Journey

The Student Leadership Handover Meeting and Dinner is a testament to the enduring spirit of leadership at Santa Maria College. It marks the continuation of a journey that begins well before students step into these roles and continues long after they leave our gates. By nurturing leadership skills, we prepare our students not just to lead but to inspire and influence others in the broader community.

As our Year 11 students prepare to embrace their new roles while commencing their Year 12 studies in Term 4, we have every confidence that they will rise to the occasion and continue to contribute to our school’s vibrant culture. Here’s to the new generation of leaders and the bright future they will help shape!
