People Are Everything – Jennifer Oaten

In education, we often talk about curriculum, achievement, innovation, and the future of work. These are all essential. But when I reflect on what truly matters in the life of a school, the answer is simple, ‘people are everything’. Schools are not simply places of learning. They are human ecosystems.

A school building can have state-of-the-art facilities, the best programs, and the latest technology. But without people, leaders who inspire, teachers who care, support staff who nurture, and friends who walk beside one another, it is just bricks and mortar.

The Heart of a School is its People

At Santa Maria College, it is the relationships within our community that shape the culture of our school and the lives of our students. It’s the warm greeting from a teacher in the morning, the shared laughter at recess, the quiet support when things feel overwhelming, and the collective celebration of each girl’s achievements. We believe that connection, belonging and feeling valued form the foundation of meaningful learning and purposeful work. A thriving community is built on relationships.

What Our Students Need Most

As parents, we all want our children to thrive academically. But more than that, we want them to become kind and compassionate young women. Girls flourish when they feel seen, known, and valued not just for their accomplishments, but for who they are.

Our students are more than learners. They are young people full of potential and hope. When students feel seen and valued they grow emotionally, socially and morally. That is why we foster a culture where every student knows they belong. It is the people in her corner, teachers, parents, mentors and friends, who will most powerfully influence a girl’s sense of self and possibility.

Our students watch us closely. They learn from how we treat each other, how we handle conflict, how we listen and forgive. Every moment of authentic connection is a lesson in empathy. Every act of kindness is a spark that can ignite something greater.

The Power of Connection

Teenagers thrive on connection. While they may test boundaries or seek independence, they are constantly craving acceptance, understanding, and meaningful relationships. Schools can offer the best programs in the world, but unless girls feel known and understood, real learning has barriers.

We intentionally build future-ready capabilities that extend well beyond academic achievement. This ensures that each girl is equipped to thrive in a complex and changing world.  Our students are encouraged to lift each other up. We foster collaboration over competition, empathy over ego. Girls learn best when they feel safe to be themselves, to speak up and to take risks.

Beyond the classroom, connections are forged through leadership, House events, service activities, retreats, and co-curricular pursuits often become the most formative of all. These experiences build a sisterhood, a network of support that lasts well beyond graduation. Finding your people is so crucial for young people’s success at school.

Our Mercy values guide our words and our actions, through Hospitality we welcome others, through Compassion we show genuine care, Justice guides our choices, Service strengthens our connections, and Excellence inspires us to be our best, for one another and for our world.

The Ripple Effect of Human Connection

One of the greatest privileges of my role is working with staff who bring passion and heart to what they do. From our grounds staff to our teachers, to our boarding staff, our support staff and our leadership team, every person plays a role in shaping a culture where girls are welcomed, cared for and inspired. Behind every success story, whether it is a student finding her voice in a debate, recovering from failure, or stepping into a leadership role, there is always someone who believed in her.

Our teachers do so much more than teach .When a student is struggling, it is not always the maths grade or homework that needs our attention. Often, it is a moment of understanding, a teacher who notices, a Dean who listens, a friend who stays. These moments don’t appear in academic data, but they are the moments that matter most.

The strength of a school community depends on the people who show up each day with purpose and care. Our staff are the heartbeat of the College. With support and empowerment our staff have a profound impact on student outcomes. We are intentional about creating a vibrant workplace where staff feel connected to their purpose.

22 of our staff are Alumni who have experienced this sense of belonging as a student and have returned to the College to work because they crave the feel of community in their workplace.

Parents as Co-Creators of Community

As parents, you are an essential part of our community. The way you speak about learning at home, the questions you ask, and the values you reinforce shape the way your daughter views herself and her education. I encourage you to talk with your daughter not just about grades or homework, but about how she feels, what she’s learning about others, and what kind of person she wants to be. When we work in partnership we create a wrap-around of care that truly nurtures the whole child.

As parents, you are your daughter’s first and most important teacher. You model what it means, to live and love with integrity. Families bring richness and story to our community. More than stakeholders, families are co-creators of our shared culture. College events and initiatives that engage parents, help to build community. Events organised by our dedicated parent representatives all contribute to a deeper sense of belonging and connection for both our students and their families.

When school and home work together, with open communication, shared values, and mutual trust our girls are equipped to become not only successful learners, but exceptional human beings.

Because People Are Everything

When we centre our decisions around people, our students, our staff, our families and our alumni, everything changes. Classrooms become places of courage, staffrooms become hubs of innovation, and school gates become doorways to a world shaped by compassion, belonging and hope.

In a world that often feels fast, transactional, digital and divided, the need for deep, genuine human connection has never been greater. Our girls need communities where they are known by name, where they feel safe to take risks, and where they are encouraged to dream boldly.

We want our students to know that relationships matter. People matter.

We aim to instil this in our girls not just through what we say, but in how we act. If our students leave our gates knowing how to build strong relationships, show empathy, and contribute meaningfully to community, then we have done our job.
