Portraiture Workshop With Prize Finalist
Portraiture is definitely enjoying its moment in the sun in our Visual Art learning area. Not only has Lester Prize finalist Jordan Andreotta joined the department this term but this week we were host to Desiree Crossing for a portraiture workshop on skin tones.
Desiree is a Perth-based, contemporary, realist painter who specialises in portraiture. She studied Fine Arts at Edith Cowan University, Central TAFE, and Set and Costume Design at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.Â
Desiree exhibits regularly in Australia and abroad and her work is held within private and government collections around the world. She was a finalist in this year’s Lester Prize for Portraiture.Â
This week, Desiree ran a workshop for Year 11.5 students. Together they are working on creating realistic skin tones using oils. The girls are all working on a cropped self-portrait.
The workshop was a prize awarded to the school through participation in the Lester Prize Youth Awards in 2019. In that year, current Year 11 student Alice Handcock was a finalist. The prize was unable to be accessed in 2020 due to COVID restrictions.
Our new Visual Arts Captain, Natalie Loach said, “I really enjoyed having the artist in residence in class. Her teaching and guidance taught us new ways to paint that we wouldn’t have done before. We all gained a new perspective on art and what we learnt will influence our work to come!”Â
