Professor Sue Fletcher Speaks to Brain Stem Students

Professor Sue Fletcher Speaks to Brain Stem Students

We were fortunate to have Professor Sue Fletcher from Murdoch University, and three of her Ph.D. students speak with the Year 10 Brain Stem class this week. The students have been studying biotechnology and surveying students and staff to determine the level of understanding amongst the general public about biotechnologies.

The Year 10 students collated their survey data and put together pamphlets outlining a type of biotechnology they had researched and the related survey information. The students were able to discuss their research topic with the Ph.D. students and elaborate on the science and the ethics of such biotechnologies.

The Ph.D. students are all working on gene-related drug therapies for rare genetic conditions including Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and were able to explain their research to the students. This increased the students’ awareness of the sort of research being carried out in WA and also provided them with more detailed insight into the medical applications of many different types of biotechnology.
