Purple With Purpose For Purple Bra Day
At Santa Maria College, our annual Purple Bra Day unites our community in solidarity with West Australians affected by breast cancer.
Led by our Year 12 student leaders, the day raised awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Care WA. The organisation provides specialist breast care nursing, counselling and financial support for people facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Its services are offered free of charge, making community fundraising events such as Purple Bra Day especially important.
This year’s event also reflected our Mercy value of Justice. By learning more about the challenges faced by people affected by breast cancer and taking practical action to support them, students showed that justice begins with recognising a need and choosing to respond.
Purple Takes Over The Catherine Courtyard
Students arrived at school wearing purple shirts, socks, accessories and creative costumes. The colour quickly filled classrooms, corridors and outdoor spaces, creating a strong sense of unity across the College.
At recess, the new Catherine Courtyard became the centre of the celebrations.
Students gathered for a purple themed bake sale, with a selection of sweet treats available to purchase. The bake sale gave students another simple way to contribute to the fundraising effort while enjoying the atmosphere of the day.
The courtyard then became a runway for the Purple Bra Day fashion parade. Students selected their own runway music before stepping forward to show off their purple outfits.
The Year 12 students brought plenty of energy to the event, dancing and modelling their outfits as the crowd cheered them on. Their confidence and enthusiasm helped make the parade a highlight of the morning.
Students And Staff Take To The Court
The celebrations continued at lunchtime with a sausage sizzle and the much anticipated annual staff versus student BRAsketball game.
Students packed the hall to support both teams as the staff and students competed for Purple Bra Day bragging rights. The game brought plenty of skill, determination and good natured competition to the court, but the staff took the win with a 24 – 12 score!
Supporting Breast Cancer Care WA
Behind every purple outfit, baked treat and basketball shot was an important purpose.
Money raised through the day will support Breast Cancer Care WA and its work with people affected by breast cancer. The organisation provides care and practical assistance at a time when individuals and families may be facing uncertainty, emotional pressure and financial challenges.
Through their participation, students demonstrated compassion, collaboration and initiative. They also showed how a community can come together and turn a fun College event into meaningful action.
A Reflection From the Head Girl Chloe
“Purple Bra Day is such an important day to celebrate in our community. Every day, five people in WA are diagnosed with breast cancer. The money we raise on this day will go towards funding for personalised care and support as well as research and wellness education through Breast Cancer Care WA. It is also so important we raise awareness for the everyday Australians battling breast cancer, reflecting our communities’ values of Justice, Service and Compassion.” Â
