Reaching Out

This year the College Mercy value is Justice. As members of a Catholic Mercy community, we are committed to acting justly by demonstrating respectful relationships with others, working for the equity of all and by caring for our planet.

During this year’s Winter Appeal, we have endeavoured to live this Mercy value by supporting three local agencies: St Vincent de Paul, Shopfront and St Patrick’s Care, who have seen an unprecedented increase in demand for their services. Staff, students, and parents rallied to gather donations of toiletries, food items, blankets and sleeping bags to support those doing it tough this winter.

The Winter appeal got underway with Outreach Day, where students from the Service groups organised various fundraising activities to kickstart the appeal. Over the ensuing weeks the donations quickly came in, with students and College departments allocated a ‘red bag’ to fill. Before long, the Service-Learning Centre was filled with non-perishable items. The sleeping bag appeal was also a huge success, with the generous support of parents and local businesses.

The Winter Appeal culminated with our Outreach Mass where the hall was a sea of red bags, filled with all the donations. Representatives from the three agencies joined us for the Mass, after which Service Captain Milla Dundas handed over the donations on behalf of the College community.

Today the Santa Maria community is proud of their Christian witness. Everyone endeavoured to put their faith into action by providing practical assistance for those most in need. We continue to be encouraged by the words from scripture which urge us to be God’s real presence in the world:

“For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat. I was naked, and you clothed me”
