Rise & Shine, It’s Fishing Time!
It’s no secret that Western Australia is home to some of the most exciting and varied recreational fishing opportunities in the world.
Taking full advantage of what the state has to offer, our Year 11 Outdoor Education students went on a two-day fishing camp to Rottnest Island.
Health and Physical Education Teacher, Parris Laurie, talks to us through what the girls got up to on this camp, and more importantly, what they have taken away from it:
What were some of the different fishing spots you visited on Rottnest Island?
Pinkies Beach, The Main Jetty, and Frankston Barracks.
What fish did you catch?
We caught a King George whiting, some yellow tail, crabs, one GIANT herring, and a lot of reef. Ava Bennier was our most consistent fisher, and Olive Asquith-Flynn caught the biggest fish!
What were students doing in the lead-up to the camp?
The girls had been fishing every week in Term 3, down at the local spots, including Point Walter and North Mole. During these sessions, the girls learned how to rig up, cast, catch and release and to fillet and scale their fish.
Why do you believe fishing is such a fantastic life skill for our girls to learn?
Learning to fish is great fun but it also teaches our girls patience, resilience, and perseverance. Fishing can be very frustrating and often it takes a while to catch a fish. In addition to that, our girls got snagged a lot which can increase frustration. The girl’s ability to persevere and continue to re-rig every time they lost their bait or got snagged was incredible. They didn’t give up and as a result, there weren’t any fishing spots where we didn’t catch a fish. Fishing is a great time for bonding, not only do the girls get plenty of time to chat with their peers and teachers but it’s a great activity for them to do with their families for bonding and quality time.
