Scarlett’s Inspiring Connection to Breast Cancer Care WA

At Santa Maria College, we are immensely proud of our students and the work many of them do in the community, volunteering and helping those in need. Recently, Year 11 student Scarlett was acknowledged by Breast Cancer WA for her unwavering dedication and impactful work with the organisation. Through her volunteering, Scarlett is making a significant difference in the lives of those affected by breast cancer in our community. Her story is one of resilience, leadership, and compassion, and we are honoured to share it with you.

Turning Personal Challenges into Community Support

Scarlett’s commitment to Breast Cancer Care WA is deeply personal. In 2021, her mother was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, a life-altering event that profoundly impacted Scarlett and her family. With her father often at work and her mother traditionally the family’s backbone, Scarlett stepped up to care for her younger siblings. This challenging period instilled in her a sense of strength and bravery that continues to inspire her actions today.

“I believe that actions speak louder than words,” Scarlett shares. “Talking about an idea can mean something, but when paired with action and initiative, it becomes much more powerful.”

Witnessing her mother’s battle with cancer taught Scarlett invaluable lessons in resilience, patience, emotional and social maturity, and the importance of staying true to oneself. She discovered her leadership abilities as she navigated her family’s needs and coordinated support from friends and relatives. Scarlett’s experience highlighted the importance of teamwork and community support during tough times.

Leading by Example: Scarlett’s Impactful Initiatives

Scarlett’s passion for making a difference manifested in several notable initiatives. Last year, for Purple Bra Day, she spearheaded a project with the Year 10 Leadership Council. Together, they created a video sharing personal stories and experiences related to cancer, aiming to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Care WA. The council organised a raffle, with all proceeds benefiting the organisation, and educated peers about the profound impact of life-changing illnesses. Scarlett’s efforts reassured students that they are not alone in their struggles and that the entire school community supports them.

Scarlett’s dedication goes beyond school projects. Earlier this year, she volunteered at the Breast Cancer Care WA gift wrapping station for Mother’s Day at Garden City, working alongside her mother. Together, they wrapped presents, interacted with customers, and contributed to a cause close to their hearts. Scarlett also regularly donates to the organisation and last year, focused her Year 10 Health stall on breast cancer awareness. Looking ahead, she plans to volunteer at the Breast Cancer Run next year, further extending her support.

A True Role Model

Scarlett’s story is a testament to the power of compassion, leadership, and community. Her tireless efforts with Breast Cancer Care WA demonstrate her commitment to making a positive impact, and her journey serves as an inspiration. At Santa Maria College, we are incredibly proud of Scarlett and the exemplary values she embodies. She is a shining example of how our students can lead with empathy, resilience, and a deep sense of social responsibility. Every action counts, and as Scarlett has shown us, the combination of initiative and compassion can truly change lives.
