When Sofia Scafetta (Class of 2020) stepped onto the stage at Rock Ya Socks off in Year 10 to sing Shallow by Lady Gaga, she could not have known that just a few years later, she would be helping coordinate behind the scenes at one of WA’s most iconic media companies. Now the Editorial Marketing Coordinator at Seven West Media, Sofia’s journey from schoolgirl to communications professional is a story of creativity, determination and a whole lot of heart.

Finding Her Passion, One Step at a Time

Since graduation, Sofia has completed a Commerce degree at Curtin University, majoring in Marketing and Public Relations. Alongside her studies, she gained real-world experience working in retail, taking on a marketing assistant role at a small firm, and completing multiple internships.

“Getting a foot in the door while studying made all the difference,” she says. “It helped me step confidently into my first full-time role.”

Her current position at Seven West Media brings together her love for storytelling, creativity and media. From running competitions to planning campaigns and uploading digital promos, Sofia’s role is a dynamic mix of strategy and spontaneity.

“One day I’ll be updating web content, the next I’m helping as an extra in a commercial, or dressing Fat Cat! That blend of creativity and collaboration makes it so rewarding.”

Where It All Began

Sofia traces her interest in marketing and PR back to her Business Management classes in Years 11 and 12 at Santa Maria.

“I was fascinated by how brands are built and how reputations were managed. I’ve always enjoyed creative problem-solving, whether through performing arts, music or public speaking, and Santa really nurtured that in me.”

Through internships at both a PR agency and at Methodist Ladies College (MLC) with a school music event, she discovered her preference for being close to the action.

“Working at MLC allowed me to connect with a brand and its community. So, when the opportunity came up at Seven West Media, it felt like the perfect fit.”

A Weekend to Remember

One of Sofia’s most memorable experiences was working behind the scenes at Telethon.

“I grew up watching Telethon on Channel 7. To play a small part in bringing it to life – meeting the talent, supporting the event and seeing the magic unfold – was honestly surreal.”

Meeting the Little Telethon Stars left the biggest impression. “Their strength and joy were humbling. It reminded me of the real power of storytelling and community.”

Proud Moments & Pageants

Another highlight? Running her first full marketing campaign as a Coordinator, for the Alinta Energy Christmas Pageant.

“Seeing everything come together, press ads, social media, and then standing there on the night looking after Fat Cat and helping Santa into his iconic sleigh, I had this moment of, wow, I’m really doing this. And even better, I can do this.”

Life Beyond the Media Buzz

When she is not working, Sofia loves catching up with friends, checking out local cafes, and staying active. “I never expected to enjoy fitness after school, but now walks and gym sessions are part of my daily routine.”

She has also held onto her love of music, performing acoustic sets at weddings after graduating. “Music is still such a big passion. It is something I hope to return to soon when things quiet down.”

Family is central to her life. “I’m so lucky to have a family that supports me wholeheartedly. Time with them, and the little everyday laughs with friends, is the best thing in the world.”

Santa Memories That Last

Reflecting on her school days, Sofia’s eyes light up.

“My favourite memory is performing Shallow at Rock Ya Socks Off. It was not just about the music but the friends, the fun, and the confidence it gave me. For a moment, I felt like a rockstar. I will always treasure that.”

Making Her Mark

Sofia’s initiative, adaptability and creativity shine through in her career, while her warmth and community spirit show the kind of Mercy woman she’s become.

From singing in school concerts to working on major media campaigns, Sofia’s story reminds us of what’s possible when passion meets purpose
