Staff Create Resources for Refugees

During our last staff professional learning day, a group of our primary and secondary staff worked together to create some literacy resources for Sister Breda O’Reilly. Sister Breda teaches English to refugees and asylum seekers at the Edmund Rice Centre in Mirrabooka each week. This is her 12th year as a volunteer at the centre. The staff created ten weeks’ worth of texts for Sister Breda’s class.

Year 6 teacher Kate Warchomij explains, “We developed levelled comprehension and grammar resources for a range of texts, fiction, and non-fiction, to support her teaching English to her classes. We spent a wonderful afternoon together. We used our varied interests and skills to develop the resource book. Handing over the booklets to her was a delight. Sister Breda was thrilled with the results and can’t wait to show her students!”

Sister Breda said, “This booklet is just fantastic! What else can I say? The people in my class will have so much fun learning to read these stories. I have had 13 different cultures in my class at one time. I love the wide variety of topics. Thanks a million.”
