Still Connected After 50 Years – Mary’s Journey
In lieu of our President’s Report this month, we have asked Mary Heavens, president of the Old Girls’ Association, to share her journey from Santa Maria student to Alumni Association President.
When Mary Heavens (Class of 1974) first walked through the gates of Santa Maria College in 1967 as a Year 5 student, she could never have imagined the lifelong connection she would forge with the College. Now, more than five decades later, she stands proudly as President of the Old Girls’ Association, a role that honours her enduring relationship with the school and her commitment to its legacy. In this candid conversation, Mary reflects on her school memories, her 44-year career in social work, and what it means to see her own daughters grow through the same Mercy education.
Fond Memories and Flourishing Friendships
Mary’s transition from England to Australia as a young girl was met with challenges, including a heavy focus on mathematics and a need to adapt to new ways of learning. But it was also filled with moments of joy that have stayed with her ever since. From winning a running race and proudly displaying the trophy at home, to watching “Annie Get Your Gun” in awe of Marian Chidlow’s performance, Mary’s school years were rich with experiences that helped shape her confidence and character.
She fondly recalls music camps in Rockingham and the quiet pride of passing her AMEB flute exams under the watchful eye of Sister Tarcisius. Most of all, she remembers the friendships, many of which have lasted a lifetime. “Discipline was evident,” she says, “but always underpinned by a sense of care.”
A Tale of Two Twins
School was a shared adventure for Mary and her identical twin sister, Sylvia. “We never had to try to confuse anyone – it just happened,” Mary laughs. From being in all the same classes to studying the same subjects and later attending university together, their twinship was a seamless part of their learning journey.
At the recent Golden Girls’ Lunch, Mary and Sylvia reconnected with another pair of identical twins Cathy and Carol O’Neil, from their year, making for a very special celebration of shared memories and unique bonds.
A Career Rooted in Compassion
Mary’s love of languages was sparked during her school years at Santa Maria, where she studied French and Italian to Leaving and Matriculation level. After leaving school, she studied a Bachelor of Arts at UWA and continued to study French and Italian. While she enjoyed the richness of language and culture, Mary knew she was not destined for a career in teaching.
Instead, she was drawn to the helping professions. Guided by the values of compassion and justice nurtured during her time at Santa Maria, Mary went on to complete a Bachelor of Social Work. It was a decision that shaped the next 44 years of her life.
In her long and fulfilling career as a social worker, Mary supported individuals and families through some of life’s most complex challenges. “The most rewarding moments were when clients shared that our work together made a difference in their lives,” she reflects.
A Full-Circle Moment as a Mum
Mary describes returning to Santa Maria as a parent as “surreal”. Her daughters Julia (Class of 2016) and Elena (Class of 2017) brought her back to the school community in a new role, and with it came a sense of pride in the College’s growth and evolution. “The improvements in facilities, subject choice, and the professionalism of staff were incredibly impressive,” she says.
Both daughters are now pursuing compassionate paths of their own, both overseas. Julia is currently in Ireland having applied to start studying later this year for a master’s degree in policy, after having completed a degree in Environmental Science. Elena is in London working as a veterinary nurse. “In different ways, they both demonstrate compassion in their careers. I am so proud of them. I am very proud of them both, and grateful for the holistic education which Santa Maria provided.”
Leading the Old Girls’ Association
Mary’s involvement in the Old Girls’ Committee was motivated by a desire to stay connected after her daughters graduated. Having served as a committee member for around eight years, she was elected President in March 2025. For Mary, the role is not about titles but about people.
“I love the relationships I have built with fellow alumni, the staff we work with, and the broader College community,” she shares. From helping at reunions and social events to supporting fundraising initiatives, the committee plays a vital role in keeping the Santa Maria spirit alive across generations.
Life Beyond Work: Joy, Community and Routine
Outside of her professional life, Mary keeps herself busy with a rich and fulfilling routine. As President of the Old Girls’ Committee, she enjoys staying closely connected to the Santa Maria community, contributing her time and leadership to a cause she cares deeply about. A lifelong reader, she recently enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sing and often turns to both fiction and non-fiction for enjoyment and reflection. Committed to staying active, Mary regularly visits the gym and walks regularly with her beloved dog, Hugo, through the streets of Fremantle. Her black cat, Doja, also gets her fair share of affection.
Mary is part of a joyful, non-competitive mahjong group that meets monthly for games, laughter and afternoon tea, a tradition she shares with her twin sister, Sylvia. She cherishes time with friends and neighbours, whether that is over a shared meal, a friendly chat or a cup of tea in her garden patio. Gardening remains a favourite pastime, offering both peace and purpose. Having recently returned from a five-week visit to see her daughters abroad, Mary is already looking forward to more travel. Whether at home or overseas, she brings warmth, energy and curiosity to all that she does.
A Legacy of Mercy
Reflecting on her journey, Mary is grateful for the Mercy values that have guided her life. “The social justice focus at Santa Maria helped me shape my career and who I am,” she says. Her story is one of resilience, service and community. It is a living testament to the College’s mission of educating young women who act with courage and compassion to enrich our world.

Calling Santa Maria Alumni Golfers for the 2026 CIGS Annual Foursomes Event
The CIGS Annual Foursomes Golf Event for Alumni is a golf day for alumni of participating independent girls’ schools in Western Australia. Santa Maria College alumni are invited to take part on Monday 21 September 2026 at Mt Lawley Golf Club. Players need to be alumni of a participating school and hold a current Golflink number. Register interest with Nina Howie by the end of July.

Expressions of interest are now open for alumni who would like to join the Santa Maria College Old Girls’ Association Committee. The committee helps strengthen lifelong connections between past students through events and initiatives that build belonging, celebrate alumni achievements, and support the ongoing spirit of the Santa Maria community. Alumni from a range of backgrounds and graduation years are encouraged to apply.
