Three Santa Maria teams competed at the Nitro Athletics Competition on Tuesday night. This exciting competition, run by Athletics WA, follows the model of the National Nitro Competition and is a modified athletics carnival featuring shorter and faster races, relays, and a powerplay system to make the competition more exciting for both competitors and spectators.
The carnival includes events unique to this occasion, a 2 x 2 x 400m event, where two runners have to run 400m twice each, a 60m sprint, long jump for accuracy and javelin for accuracy. It also includes a Swedish relay, which involves a 100m, 200m, 300m and 400m leg.
Our girls showed true professionalism and enthusiasm, as well as great sportsmanship with each other and those from other schools they were competing against.
The weather was challenging but the girls took this in their stride and ended up with some fantastic results. Our Senior and Junior Teams finished 2nd overall, qualifying for the National Competition and receiving the silver medal.
