Students Earn Bronze Medallion
As part of the Year 10 Outdoor Education Program, we run a Bronze Medallion unit in Term 4 for all classes. We are lucky to be able to do this in class time. We have three Outdoor Education Teachers who are aquatic trainers through the Royal Life Saving Association, who can facilitate the course.
The unit involves a theory component and several practical assessments, and if the students are deemed competent in all components, they are then issued with the Bronze Medallion qualification. This means they have the knowledge and skills to successfully rescue casualties in aquatic environments and perform CPR if required.Â
We run this through the Outdoor Education course. We offer many aquatic activities in our Outdoor Education programs for students in Years 9 to 12, and it ties in nicely with our first aid units. In our Year 9 Recreational Studies program, we have also introduced a surf safety unit, which focuses on beach awareness and rescues suitable for different activities and environments.Â
As of 2020, we have programmed a Bronze Medallion re-qualification course into the Years 11 and 12 programs. This ensures students who have gained this qualification, maintain their currency.Â
We are extremely lucky to live near beautiful aquatic environments and to be able to participate in exciting aquatic activities. It is so important for young people to learn about aquatic safety, so they can not only keep themselves safe but also help others in need.Â
Santa Maria Teams Shine in Term 1 Sports
