Students Shine at IGSSA Dance Festival

Santa Maria College’s Hip Hop and Contemporary Dance Troupes recently took centre stage at the IGSSA Dance Festival held at St Hilda’s. The troupes showcased their wonderful dance technique and performance skills.

Our Hip Hop dancers performed ‘Rhythm Nation’ choreographed by guest artist Danielle Rafaelle.

This dance piece explored the spirit of empowerment and unity in Janet Jackson’s iconic Rhythm Nation. These themes sit firmly within our College values as we strive to join our voices in protest of social injustice. Jackson’s strong and impactful lyrics resonated with our students and the audience. The dancers received excellent feedback from the audience about their precise and polished performance

‘Roses’ was also performed. This dance work was choreographed by our dance teacher, Jessica Wynn, and the Santa Maria College Contemporary Dance Troupe. ‘Roses’ is inspired by the 600 stunning rose bushes on our College’s grounds. The first section, ‘Bloom,’ explored the delicate structure of the flower, and the second section, ‘Thorns,’ looked at the stem with stronger angular movement. The contemporary dancers made many creative contributions to the choreography of this beautiful dance work.

Reflecting on the experience, Year 12 student Allegra shared, “Reflecting on my final IGSSA Dance Festival, I was filled with a mix of joy and nostalgia. Having participated since Year 7, this festival has been a cherished part of my high school experience. Each year, the thrill of performing and the bond with the other dancers created memories I will forever treasure.”
