In their meeting today, the Social Justice Group, a co-curricular group for students in Years 10-12, wrote letters to their Federal Members of Parliament, calling for action on the issue of the offshore processing of asylum seekers. This practical action to promote change came about as a result of learning about Australia’s treatment of people seeking refuge, including the many people who remain stranded on Manus Island and Nauru. Students encouraged their Member of Parliament to help move Australia in a new direction in our treatment of people seeking asylum. Students are looking forward to receiving responses from their MPs on this social justice issue.

Year 12 student Isabella Robertson said, “I believe that the letter-writing activity to our local MPs was an important activity for our Social Justice group, it allowed us to implement things we learnt last semester and from our reflection morning with Nathan Leber. Simply writing a letter can have a huge impact within our local community, trying to raise awareness regarding the issue of refugees.
