Students Start Course at WAAPA

Students Start Course at WAAPA

Two Year 11 students, Grace Watts and Stella Chiappini, have been accepted to study a Certificate IV in Live Theatre and Theatre Studies at WAAPA, one day a week over the next two years. This is the first year this certificate course has been offered.

“I chose the Cert IV in Live Production because I have been interested in the Drama area and College productions, since Year 7,” Grace said. “It was an opportunity for me to do something new and spend a day a week off-campus at WAAPA. I am excited to explore all aspects of this qualification, including backstage, and to grow my networks in this area. After Year 12 I’m a little unsure as to what I might do but I’d love to start my own business or look at careers in the industry area of productions.

Stella added, “I would like to work in the creative arts industry, more specifically TV and other relevant media environments. This course will provide me with the skills to understand and solve difficult and unpredictable problems, that relate to technical live production jobs in creative industries. Some of the specialist skills I will be learning in my time at WAAPA include operating show control systems, installing and uninstalling specialist staging, light and audio equipment and using casting and moulding techniques to make props. I am excited to be commencing this qualification because I will be working collaboratively with industry professionals which will help me gain valuable knowledge and hopefully expand my networks at the same time.”

It is early days in the program but already the girls are very enthusiastic and excited. Students will complete OSH units and spend 20 hours assisting with a school production. There are 13 students from five metro schools who have enrolled.
