Prickly Classmates for Year 5

The Year 5 students have some strange visitors in their classrooms over the next few weeks! The Science Department has generously allowed Year 5 to care for their four Thorny Stick Insects while the students are learning about adaptations.

Baby Chicks Arrive in Science

At the start of this week, the College received its incubator and some eggs. Four chicks have hatched already. The chicks are getting lots of interest from the students.

Marine Science Class Visit To Aqua

The Year 9 Marine Science classes visited AQWA yesterday to collect information relating to the outcomes, they are covering this term, in relation to classification and marine biodiversity.

Ladies in Labcoats Research Gluten

This semester, our girls from Ladies in Labcoats worked with Murdoch University’s Professor Chris Florides on a project that focused on finding ways to lower the allergenic properties of a variety of wheat and barley seeds.

Mythbusters Fair

Our Year 7 MythBuster students have been testing their ingenuity by designing their own investigations to test a variety of myths! 

Year 9 Marine Science Students Visit Penguin Island

The Year 9 Marine Science class are visiting Penguin Island today, part of the Shoalwater Marine Park. The girls will attend an interactive penguin feeding session and enjoy a cruise of the area where they can view local wildlife such as dolphins and sea lions.

Dolphin Watch

Dolphin Watch 2017 has well and truly started at Santa Maria College. Joselyn Juraszek from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Visitor Attractions was invited to the College on Tuesday evening to chat to our ever-growing group of Mini Ladies in Lab Coats.

Brain Bee Challenge

On Monday 25 July, myself and five others travelled to the University of Western Australia to compete in the state finals for the Brain Bee Challenge. This is a national neuroscience competition for Year 10 students. We had already completed Round 1 and were chosen to advance to Round 2 based on the scores we had achieved earlier.

Year 11 Biology Camp

Our Year 11 students recently spent two days conducting fieldwork, helping gather data for the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
