Term 4 Highlights – Capping Off A Fabulous Year – Jennifer Oaten

As we wrap up Term 4 at Santa Maria College, I am so proud of the incredible ways our students, staff, and the wider community have lived out our values. This term has been filled with milestones, celebrations, and moments that truly reflect what makes our school special. Some of the term highlights are shared below; however, there are many more!
Celebrating Faith and Inclusivity
Our Year 9 Reflection Day was a unique opportunity for students to grow in faith and understanding. Visits to a Hindu temple and Jewish synagogue, guided by passionate leaders Dr Krishnan and Rabbi Lieberman, deepened their appreciation for diverse faith traditions. This experience supported our mission to foster inclusivity and broaden students’ worldviews, a cornerstone of Santa Maria College’s faith-based education and diversity strategy.

Connecting Learning To Life
Our students have shone in so many ways this term.
- At the JIGSSA Athletics Carnival, Years 5 and 6 students displayed determination and teamwork, excelling in track and field events despite the heat. Their commitment and energy paid off, with Year 5 securing 5th place and Year 6 achieving 6th. We are so proud of their sportsmanship and commitment.
- Inspire 2024 was a spectacular celebration of student creativity. The Mercy Gallery was transformed by incredible artworks, including Year 10’s architectural ceramics and Year 9’s whimsical chicken art. The fashion parade stole the show, with Year 10 students debuting street art-inspired outfits and Year 8 showcasing AI-designed handbags. Inspire 2024 showcased the talent and imagination of our students.
- Year 9 Camp enabled students to challenge themselves, develop friendships and understand the importance of teamwork. They were given responsibility for cooking and involved in caving, snorkelling, mountain biking and other activities, which enabled them to grow in confidence in the outdoors.

- Our Middle Years Production, The Girl in the Hood, brought humour and heart to the stage. With 48 students participating, this modern pantomime was more than a performance; it was a chance for students to develop confidence, presence and a strong sense of community.
- The Tribute Concert highlighted the musical talent of over 60 students from Years 8 – 11. From Taylor Swift to Coldplay, their performances were inspiring, showcasing their passion for music and their ability to step outside their comfort zones.
- Our Year 12 Mock Trial team earned runner-up in the prestigious Western Australia Mock Trial competition, competing against over 120 schools. Their success reflects their outstanding teamwork, critical thinking, and public speaking skills.
- The Year 10 Outdoor Education camp in Margaret River was a standout experience. Students tackled activities like abseiling and rock climbing, camped under the stars, and learned about Indigenous culture. This program encouraged personal growth and a deeper connection with the environment.
- Future10 provided a strong foundation for all Year 10 students in financial skills necessary for young people. From budgeting to personal finances to an awareness of career opportunities, this crucial program helps to ensure our students understand how to be more financially successful.

Driving Social Innovation
Compassion and care for others were at the heart of many of our projects this term.
- Mini Vinnies created affirmation cards for younger students, promoting kindness and positivity in our classrooms. These small acts of encouragement help build a supportive school environment.
- Year 6 students tackled issues like homelessness and pollution in the Spark6 project. By designing innovative, sustainable solutions, they demonstrated innovation to solve problems and a commitment to shaping a better future.
- The Reason for Being program helped Year 9 students explore their personal values and purpose. Activities encouraged empathy and inclusivity, equipping students with skills to connect meaningfully with each other and their communities.
- Our annual Santa4Santa Day brought our community together to raise funds for local charities like St Vincent de Paul. With festive stalls and activities, this event captured the spirit of service and giving, reminding us all of the true meaning of Christmas.

Strengthening Community Connections
The Golden Girls Luncheon was a highlight of the term, welcoming alumni who graduated over 50 years ago back to the College. More than 100 guests, including Dorothy from the Class of 1943, joined us to share stories and laughter. Events like this celebrate the lifelong bonds formed at Santa Maria and highlight the strength of our community.
We acknowledged and farewelled our Class of 2024 at our Valedictory Events. The graduation Mass and Ceremony celebrated their growth, achievements, and the Mercy values they have embodied. These young women leave Santa Maria ready to make a difference in the world, and we wish them every success as they take their next steps.
Looking Ahead
As Term 4 comes to a close, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible efforts of our students, staff, and families. It is through your passion and dedication that Santa Maria continues to thrive as a community of faith, learning, and innovation. Here is to an exciting 2025 ahead!
