The Power of Father-Daughter Relationships – Jennifer Oaten

Fathers Day

As we approach Father’s Day, it is a timely reminder of the significant influence father figures have on the lives of young women. Research shows that positive father involvement is linked to better emotional, academic, and social outcomes for girls, highlighting the irreplaceable role fathers and father figures play in their daughters’ lives.

Today, families come in many forms, and father figures might be grandfathers, uncles, coaches, or mentors. Regardless of their title, their influence can shape a girl’s self-esteem, resilience, and aspirations.

Reflecting on my own father’s impact, it’s clear that these connections shape who we become.

My father was more than just a parent; he was a mentor and guide. As a farmer, his love for the land and ocean not only defined our time together but also inspired my passion for science. I spent many hours by his side fishing, planting, and simply appreciating the land and finding a use for any item rather than adding to the rubbish pile. These are the memories that shape who we are, and they are the gifts fathers give, whether through traditional relationships or in the many father-figure relationships that exist today.

Ways Fathers and Father Figures Can Make a Difference

Love Your Daughter Unconditionally

Every girl will make mistakes; the world can be challenging. Show her compassion and communicate how proud you are regardless of the outcome. Help her learn and grow from her choices, always assuring her that your love remains unwavering. Remember, it is how she treats others and her inner character that matters most—love her just as she is.

Value Her Opinion

All young women need to feel heard. Give her your undivided attention, listen carefully, and allow her to confide in you without fear of judgment. Encourage her to think deeply and express her thoughts, ensuring she feels valued and understood.

Model Respectful Relationships

A father figure is a daughter’s prime role model for relationships. How you treat your partner, whether you are together or apart, demonstrates to your daughter how she deserves to be treated. Showing respect, kindness, and equality in your relationships sets the standard for her future expectations.

Inspire Her to Reach for the Stars

Girls need to believe that anything is possible. Share your mistakes, your learnings, and how you have overcome challenges. Let her know that her options are not limited by gender or societal norms. Connect her with mentors and encourage her dreams, no matter how big.

Encourage Her to Be Brave

Challenge your daughter to step out of her comfort zone. Whether it’s tackling a difficult maths problem, trying out for a sports team, or performing a music solo, support her in facing challenges. Your encouragement can give her the confidence to overcome obstacles and grow stronger.

Show Up to Her Events

Be present at her sports games, performances, and parent-teacher meetings. Your presence matters, especially during the turbulent teenage years when self-esteem can be fragile. Cherish these moments—they pass by quickly but leave lasting memories of support and love.
