The School Sport WA Cross Country Carnivals
Students from Years 5–12 proudly represented Santa Maria College this week, competing with determination and enthusiasm at the SSWA Primary and Secondary Cross Country Carnivals. Held at Yokine Regional Open Space, the events brought together students from schools across Western Australia, providing a wonderful opportunity for our students to challenge themselves and showcase their resilience and school spirit.
Two Days of Effort and Courage
Our Years 5 and 6 students approached their carnival with plenty of energy and heart. For many, it was a chance to test themselves in a challenging interschool setting and discover what they could do when nerves, excitement and determination all turned up at once.
Some were chasing strong times and personal bests, and some were simply determined to give something difficult a proper go. Every one of those goals mattered.
Our secondary students brought the same spirit to their carnival, along with the composure and focus that comes with experience. The secondary championship is a significant event on the school sport calendar and also serves as a trial opportunity for state selection in relevant age groups. Our Years 7 to 12 students stepped into that environment with maturity and a willingness to push themselves.
What Our Students Gained
For our students, cross-country requires discipline, self-belief, and the ability to stay steady when things get hard. It asks students to run their own race, trust their preparation and finish knowing they gave what they had.
We were incredibly proud of the way our students represented Santa Maria across both carnivals. They competed with courage, encouraged one another generously and showed the kind of excellence that is not always measured by a stopwatch.
