Turning Pink For Girls’ Education

Santa Maria was a sea of pink today as students and staff came together to raise awareness and raise funds for girls’ education.

We asked Amy Treasure, Head Boarder, why she thought it was important to recognise Girls4Girls Day. “It is always important to recognise those who are not as privileged as we are with our education here at Santa, and to appreciate that our efforts today are going to help girls get an education that can see them take on the world.”

Service Captain Steph Tory said, “It is important to recognise how fortunate we are as Santa Maria students, with amazing school facilities, teachers and resources. However, for many girls around the globe, this isn’t the reality.  Supporting this day is one way we can help out and serve others.”

The girls were invited to dress in pink for a gold coin donation.  The slogan for the day was ‘On Thursdays we wear pink’, from the movie Mean Girls, however, our students are anything but mean! The girls generously donated to the cake stall, lolly Stall and sausage sizzle. The girls enjoyed activities, which included face painting, having their photo taken in front of a pink photo wall and were entertained by some very talented staff. Our wonderful Mozzies dads helped us graciously by cooking a BBQ for 500 students who supported the sausage sizzle.

Overall the day was a great success with over $4000 collected. The funds raised will be donated to Sr Denise Coghlan in Cambodia, Mercy Secondary School in Yarapos, Papua New Guinea and the School of St Yared’s in Ethiopia.  Three communities very close to our Mercy hearts!
