Workplace Learning: A Student’s Perspective
Workplace Learning is a challenging but beneficial experience for Year 11 and 12 girls taking part in the ACCESS pathway. Each student selects a profession that they are interested in exploring for the future and works for 10 days whilst the ATAR girls sit their exams.
Why we do it:
Workplace Learning is an important experience as:
- It gives students the experience of being part of the workforce
- It helps students understand professional standards
- It teaches students new and essential skills
- It is a good way for students to see what areas they enjoy working in for the future
I did my Workplace Learning in the Community Relations Department at Santa Maria College. I would highly recommend this placement to other students. I was placed in this department as I told the Head of the Careers Department that I was interested in photography and would like to go into a more creative area.
Before I started this workplace, I had no idea what the Community Relations Department was and never even knew that it existed. After my workplace, I now know what a vital role this department plays.
Throughout my Workplace Learning experience, I was given a wide range of different tasks to complete which I appreciated as I got a feel of many different types of jobs all in one.
Some of the jobs I was given whilst working in the Community Relations Department included: Shadowing the talented photographer, Megan, and helping out with photographing girls, designing invitations for parentsu2019 nights and learning how to create and edit the Weekly Wrap Up videos. I also learnt how to upload photos or articles to the schoolu2019s website, Facebook and Instagram pages.
I felt really nervous walking in on my first day as I had no idea of the type of duties I would have to carry out, I had also never been in such a professional environment and was unsure of what to expect. I soon found my bearings and become more comfortable and confident, not only in myself but in the tasks I was completing.
The wonderful group of staff I had around me helped immensely as they made me feel comfortable and included. I never felt shy to ask a question and they were always happy to help. After completing this Workplace Learning experience, I am excited and more prepared for the future.
