Year 10 Dance Lessons: A Tradition That Lives On

Dance lessons with the Year 10 girls and the Year 10 boys from Aquinas College have been a tradition that has carried on for decades.

In the 1985 Reflections, Erin Gore, a Year 10 student at the time said, “This year’s dancing lessons and graduation dance were a time when both Aquinas and Santa Maria could get together with a common goal – learning to dance. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, took advantage of the chance to meet new people and in some cases, formed new friendships. During the 10-week period, the attitude of a lot of the Year 10s changed; their shyness vanished, and everybody mixed more freely…”

Love them or hate them, they are a tradition for our Year 10s. The lessons started for this year’s group this week.

Year 10 student, Karin Boulton commented on her first lesson. “It was an enjoyable afternoon and a great opportunity to meet and interact with new people and learn different dances from the professionals at Humphrey’s Dance Studio. I had a lot of fun and am looking forward to the social in September.”

Abby Young said, “The dances we learnt, including the cha-cha, were a bit challenging at the start but we eventually got the hang of it. I’m looking forward to our upcoming lessons and the social.”

Past student Susan Weston (Huston, 1970) remembers being one of the first or second groups to do the dance lessons in 1968 when she was in Year 10. Susan even won an award for Most Improved Dancer at Speech Night! “I just hope the girls remember this event with the same fondness that I have for it,” she said.
