Year 10 Students Take Flight with Wearable Butterfly Wings
When you think of butterfly wings, what comes to mind? Delicate shapes, vivid colours, and a little bit of magic. For our Year 10 Design students, they have become the launchpad for one of the most ambitious and imaginative projects of the year.
In this hands-on task, students have been challenged to create wearable sculptural art inspired by butterfly wings. It is part of their exploration into design thinking, creativity, and innovation and let’s just say, there are no cookie-cutter outcomes here!
A Project with No Creative Limits
This is not your average classroom assignment. There are no boundaries on materials, style, or scale. In fact, students are encouraged to think big and bold, pushing the limits of what wearable art can be. From lightweight wire structures to textured paper, fabric, recycled plastics and even LED lights, anything goes, if it captures their personal interpretation of a theme.
It is not just about the final look either. Students must consider how their piece will balance, move and feel on a real body while being grounded in functionality and aesthetics.
More Than Just Wings
While the butterfly wings are the inspiration, this project is really about developing deeper skills. Students are learning to:
- Think like designers, analysing how ideas evolve into tangible outcomes
- Make ethical and sustainable design choices
- Use emerging technologies and creative media
- Manage time, test ideas and troubleshoot real-world production challenges
They also work independently and collaboratively, reflecting on their decisions as they go. It is a true blend of imagination and enterprise.
Why Butterflies?
Changing the inspiration from fashion icons to butterflies gave the project new meaning. The butterfly symbolises transformation, and what better metaphor for the creative process? Every wing tells a different story, some wild, some delicate, some dramatic. Each one reflects the student’s own energy and theme.
A Glimpse into the Future
What we love most about this project is how it shows the future of learning in action. It is messy, exciting and full of growth. And the best part? Our students are in the driver’s seat, exploring who they are as creatives and as thinkers.
We cannot wait to see these incredible creations take to the runway at the upcoming Inspire 2025.
