Year 10s Look Confidently to the Future

The recent coronavirus pandemic has encouraged changes to the way we do things in many different ways.  For Year 10 students at Santa Maria College, the process for course selections for 2021 has been launched with an exciting mode of delivery.

Things have changed

Under normal circumstances, we would have large gatherings to share information, like the Parent Information Evening, regular face to face presence of external expert advisers, and the ritual excursion to a career gathering in the CBD. It would be understandable if students were feeling unsettled and on unfamiliar ground with big decisions ahead.  However, with the collective wisdom of the Year 10 Pastoral Care Team working in collaboration with the College Careers Team a new way of looking to the future has commenced.

Using Technology to Deliver Content

The use of  Microsoft Teams proved successful in the delivery of the Pastoral Care Program while students were learning remotely. The platform has continued to be developed as a repository of resources for students to use under the guidance of Homeroom teachers. Thursday PCTs have been a buzzing hub of exploration as students create an Individual Pathway Plan. They will share that Plan with their parents, as they navigate the discernment process of future planning.

During the process, the Year 10 girls have been invited to:

  • complete career personality quizzes,
  • create inventories of skills and abilities,
  • reflect on the place of values and goals
  • hear about the future of work for Generation Z
  • explore an abundance of career opportunities.

Year 12 students have generously offered their time and created over 40 short videos about their favourite courses and shared their experiences of Years 11 and 12.

Learning Area teachers have been working on Q&A video presentations responding to questions Year 10s have raised about the course offerings in each area.

This latest crisis has presented an opportunity for a flexible use of technology, a revived appreciation for individual exploration, the sharing of senior students’ generosity, and the empathy and guidance of staff eager to assist Year 10s to move forward confidently.

Term 2 will be an exciting time!
