Year 5s Study Effective Communication Skills

Year 5s Study Effective Communication Skills

Year 5s  have been studying effective communication skills. The students have been learning about:

  • varying voice volume
  • tone and pitch
  • using gestures
  • interacting with the audience.

The girls were given the task of writing a persuasive speech about an aspect of their life at Santa Maria.

They were encouraged to use effective communication skills whilst performing their speech in front of the class and Mrs Oaten.

Some examples of speeches were:

  • Year 5 & 6s should have lockers
  • All students at Santa Maria should learn a musical instrument
  • Homework at Santa Maria should be banned

Anwen Davies (5.2) said, “My speech was titled ‘We should come back to school’.  I missed coming to Santa Maria and my speech was made to persuade the government to let kids return to school. It was so scary talking in front of the class.  Afterward, I felt so good, like all of the butterflies were burnt from my tummy.”

Summer Golding (5.2) said, “My speech was called ‘Santa Maria should board horses’.  I chose this topic because I love horses and I feel bad for the boarders who have to leave their beautiful horses behind on their farms.  When I did my speech I was so nervous. I wanted to keep looking at my computer because I kept having mind blanks.”
