Year 6 Grandparents Day Brings Generations Together
A hug, a few quiet words and a moment to say what often goes unsaid. For our Year 6 girls, one of the most meaningful parts of Grandparents Day was also one of the simplest, taking the time to tell their grandparents and grandfriends just how much they mean to them.
Year 6 Grandparents Day welcomed grandparents and grandfriends into the College for a morning of connection and celebration. From visiting classrooms and discovering what the girls have been learning to gathering for a beautiful Liturgy and morning tea, it was a special opportunity for our students to share their Santa Maria world with some of the people who know and love them best.
Sharing a Little of Their World
The morning began in the Year 6 classrooms, where grandparents and grandfriends toured the learning spaces and saw some of the work the girls have completed throughout the year. For the students, it was a chance to be the hosts, sharing the ideas, learning and experiences that make up their days at Santa Maria.
From there, everyone gathered in the Cultural Centre for the Liturgy.
The Joy of Time Together
During the Liturgy, principal Jennifer Oaten reflected on a gift to their grandparents that cannot be wrapped or bought.
“One of the best gifts young people can give their grandparents is time.”
That idea became something tangible when Jo Ryan invited the girls and their guests to pause, embrace and tell each other what they appreciated about their relationship. It was a simple but meaningful moment, cherished by all.
The Year 11 musicians added their voices to the Liturgy through song, before students, staff, grandparents and grandfriends joined together in prayer.
These moments gave everyone a chance to slow down and recognise the relationships sitting right beside them.
New Memories Alongside Old Ones
Following the Liturgy, everyone gathered in the foyer for morning tea and more time together.
Grandparents Day celebrates relationships that stretch well beyond a single morning. There are years of conversations, traditions, lessons, laughter and memories behind every grandparent and grandfriend who walks through the College gates.
For our Year 6 girls, Friday offered the chance to add another memory to that collection.
