Year 6s Learn to Do It Themselves

The Year 6 Do it Yourself (DIY) classes expose students to the fundamentals of sewing and cooking. During the semester, the girls learn skills in both areas to assist them with day to day domestic activities.
In today’s class, the girls were learning about the differences between homemade versus store-bought treats by making a Weet-bix slice. We thought we’d share this yummy recipe with you.
WEET-BIX SLICE
Slice IngredientsÂ
- 2 ½ Weet-bix crushed
- 3/4 cup plain flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon cocoa
- 1/4 cup (heaped) desiccated coconutÂ
- 1/2 tablespoon golden syrup (a small squeeze)
- 100g butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla essenceÂ
Method
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees fan bake.Â
- Line a medium-sized slice tin with baking paper.Â
- Crush Weet-bix with your hands.Â
- Put Weet-bix, flour, baking powder, cocoa and coconut into a mixing bowl.Â
- Place sugar, golden syrup and butter into a saucepan and simmer over low heat until sugar is dissolved.Â
- Pour the liquid mixture and vanilla essence over dry ingredients. Mix well using a wooden spoon.
- Press ingredients into the lined slice tin.Â
- Bake for 15 minutes.Â

Icing ingredientsÂ
- 1/2 cup icing sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon of cocoaÂ
- Boiling waterÂ
Method
- Make the icing by mixing icing sugar, cocoa and boiling water together with a spoon.Â
- Remove slice from the oven and allow to cool. Drizzle or spread icing over slice. Cut and serve.Â
