Year 7s Building Bonds

At Santa Maria College, we believe that fostering strong relationships is essential to a young woman’s development. That is why our Year 7 Health unit, Relationships, is designed to help students understand and nurture the connections that matter most to them. Each student had the opportunity to invite a special person to join them during their health class for a practical activity focused on building and maintaining relationships. During the term, they have explored many topics around healthy relationships, including listening skills, trust, empathy, body language and dealing with conflict, to name a few.

A Day to Remember

During the special person visit, students welcomed a person of their choice—a parent, grandparent, mentor, or friend—to share in a meaningful activity during their allocated class time. This wasn’t just about spending time together; it was about deepening the bonds that support our students as they grow into confident young women. The event also offers a unique glimpse into the daily life at Santa Maria College, providing guests with a firsthand look at our commitment to community and belonging.

Fun Activities and Lasting Memories

Our Year 7 students put a lot of thought and creativity into planning the activity that they could enjoy with their special guests. Whether it was a collaborative project, a game, or an artistic endeavour, the focus was on teamwork, communication, and, most importantly, having fun together. This shared experience was a great way to slow down and spend quality time together – which sometimes is quite hard to come by!

We were delighted to witness the joy and connection our students and their special guests shared during this event. These heartwarming moments truly capture the spirit of Santa Maria College, where education goes beyond academics.

Anita Sprigg, Head of Health & Physical Education, said, “We have had great joy in observing activities such as painting, playing cards, kicking the footy and chats, nail painting, mindful colouring, walk and talk, cookie decorating, picnic, and snack box. The feedback from visitors has also been overwhelmingly positive, and many have expressed sincere gratitude for the time spent with the students!

Student Testimonials

A highlight of the special person visit was taking my aunty for a tour around the school and having a picnic. I chose this activity because Santa Maria is a big school, and she has no children who go to it. So, I thought it would be nice to show her around, look at all the features, and have a picnic with snacks afterwards. Sienna

My highlight of the special person visit was that my special person was able to come, as I didn’t think she would be available. I also chose to decorate coasters with paint pens, as I knew my special person would enjoy that. Imogen

A highlight for me was catching up and talking about everything we have been doing since we last saw each other because we have been so busy that we haven’t had the time to catch up. I chose for us to paint nails, colour in, and paint flowers. I chose this because we love doing art together and being creative, and we always made stuff when I was little. Mila
