Year 9 Foodies Take on the Mystery Box Challenge
What happens when you mix cultural flavours, curious minds and a surprise ingredient? For our Year 9 Food students, it meant one thing: the Mystery Box Challenge, and it was a recipe for fun, flavour and fantastic learning!
Cooking Outside the Recipe Book
Instead of following a step-by-step recipe, students were challenged to step into the role of a food designer. Their task? To create their own savoury main course using only the ingredients available in the mystery box along with some basic pantry items inspired by a specific cuisine, Korean, Sri Lankan or Lebanese.
The task was to investigate, design, produce and evaluate a dish that celebrated their assigned cuisine, all while working closely with a partner. It was a hands-on way to explore the technology process, and the brief was clear: cooking from a recipe is easy – now it’s your turn to do the hard work and get creative!
“I really enjoyed coming up with a meal using the random ingredients. It helped me think quickly and be creative in the kitchen.” Sienna
One More Surprise...
Just as students were ready to cook, feeling confident in their carefully planned recipes, there was one final twist: a bonus mystery ingredient.
This extra element had to be incorporated into their dish – no exceptions. It sparked quick thinking and problem-solving as students adapted their plans and adjusted flavours to make everything work. Some added a dash of this or swapped out a bit of that, and the results were surprisingly impressive!
“I loved not knowing what the surprise ingredient was and having to include it in our dish. It made it more fun and enjoyable.” Lucy

Why We Loved It
The Mystery Box Challenge was more than just a cook-up. It encouraged:
- Creative thinking – developing something original from set ingredients
- Cultural exploration – learning the flavours and traditions of global cuisines
- Teamwork – planning, preparing and plating alongside a partner
- Adaptability – dealing with unexpected ingredients and making it work
It was a vibrant, sensory-rich experience that brought the classroom to life.
A Taste of Real-World Learning
The food room was full of energy – sizzling pans, colourful ingredients, lots of conversation and even more curiosity. Final dishes were creative, bold and beautifully presented. There may have been a few surprises along the way, but students rose to the challenge with confidence and flair.
Growing Through Challenge
This task brought together some of the best parts of learning – collaboration, critical thinking and courage to try something new. It also reflected the Mercy value of Excellence, as students pushed themselves to create their best work, and learned valuable life skills in the process.
