Years 5 & 6 Winter Games 2025

Over the past few weeks, our Years 5 and 6 students taken part in sporting events that were equal parts sporty, social and seriously fun, the Winter Games!
The girls laced up their sneakers and took to the courts and fields with excitement (and maybe a few nerves) as they faced off against students from other JIGSSA schools. For many, it was their first time playing in a competitive team environment, and they absolutely rose to the occasion.
Year 6 Students Step Up
Over three days across three weeks, our Year 6 students embraced their Winter Games, competing against other JIGSSA schools in sports such as hockey, basketball, soccer and netball. For many, it was their first time in a competitive team environment. They rose to the challenge with courage and excitement.
Team Highlights
There was plenty to cheer about, including some impressive team achievements:
- The Year 6 B Division Netball team went undefeated in all seven games, taking out the pennant.
- The Year 6 A Division Soccer team also performed brilliantly. They too were undefeated and won the pennant.
These wins speak volumes about the girls’ grit, strategy and teamwork.

Trying Something New
There is something special about watching a student step outside her comfort zone. For Charlize, it was picking up a hockey stick for the first time.
“I played hockey for the first time, and I liked learning about how you need to space out when someone had a free hit,” Charlize shared.
Year 5 Gets a Taste of the Action
Our Year 5 students brought just as much enthusiasm to their one-day Winter Games. They competed against other JIGSSA schools, forming friendships, learning new skills, and discovering the joy of team sport. It is a fun-filled day that introduces them to interschool competition in a welcoming, low-pressure environment.
Team Highlights
- Division A and B soccer teams won the pennant.
- Division A netball team won their pennant.
- Division A and B basketball teams placed second.

Encouragement in Action
The sidelines were filled with cheers at both events with high-fives, and encouragement. Neave, who joined the basketball team this year, felt the power of her peers:
“I played basketball for Winter Games which is new for me. I loved the encouragement from my teammates cheering me on!”
This sense of support and connection shines through across both year levels, a beautiful reflection of the girls’ spirit.

It's Not About the Scores
It is not just about the scores. Across both events, our students demonstrated resilience, curiosity and collaboration as they:
- Tried new sports with a ‘give it a go’ mindset
- Learned to work as a team, even when things didn’t go to plan
- Celebrated effort just as much as outcomes
These moments echo our value of Excellence and highlight personal attributes like confidence, resilience, and collaboration.
A Lasting Impact
We are so proud of our Years 5 and 6 students. Through sport, they have strengthened friendships, built new skills, and discovered just how powerful encouragement and effort can be. Whether it was one big day or three, students gave it their all, and had a ball doing it.
