Past Students Share Their Career Stories
Learning from those who have gone before, hearing their stories and challenges can be helpful when making those important career decisions.
This week Santa Maria College held its second industry forum entitled ‘Discovering Careers’ for interested Years 11 and 12 students and their parents. This was a little different to the previous Health and Medicine forum. The focus was not on just one industry, but rather it was to uncover the vast occupational and industry possibilities that can stem from studying various university courses.Â
Past students who spoke to the audience included:
- Rose Grier (Class of 2017), Human Capital Consultant from Deloitte
- Isabella Hardwick (Class of 2014), Data Analyst from Rio Tinto
- Rachel Hobbs (Class of 2016), Analyst – Investment Banking from Macquarie Capital
- Chloe Donjerkovich (Class of 2007), Legal Counsel from Woodside.
Ella Ewart (Law and Criminology) from Murdoch University, although not a Santa Maria alumni, graciously stepped in at the last minute to replace Emma Pelliccione. Ella provided an engaging presentation. All speakers provided rich personal stories about their very exciting occupation and their steps to get them to where they are now. Â
Both parents and students were overwhelmed by the quality and calibre of these successful women who embodied the Mercy value of Excellence in navigating through their career pathway. Â
Representatives from Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, University of Notre Dame and the University of Western Australia were also present and were able to provide information stemming from their respective humanities-based faculties.Â
The Years 11 and 12 students who attended had the opportunity to network at length with Santa Maria professional alumni and speak extensively to university representatives.
A special thanks must go to key industry partner Deloitte for their support and producing some engaging resource materials that celebrate the career journeys of successful past Santa Maria College students.
Combating The Attention Span Crisis In Our Students – Jennifer Oaten
It is no secret that attention spans have been steadily declining, especially among younger generations growing up immersed in digital technology. The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
