Every Child Needs A Champion
Every teacher, in every lesson, and every staff member, in every corridor, in every interaction throughout the College, contributes to our culture.
In our Year of Compassion……. Every child needs a champion.
This school year, Santa Maria College is celebrating the Mercy value of Compassion, so it was fitting that Principal Jennifer Oaten opened her address to staff with this wonderful statement of intent. She inspired staff to grow personally and as a college, to be truly connected to our students and our colleagues.
Mrs Oaten then shared this wonderful Ted Talk by Rita Pierson. Rita is an educator with 40 years of experience. She says that students learn best from teachers they believe truly care about them. She offers a rousing call to educators to believe in their students and connect with them on a real, human and personal level.
The Value of Student Voice – Jennifer Oaten
“At Santa Maria College, we are not only given the opportunity, but we are encouraged by our teachers and each other to voice our opinions, concerns and ideas—to continue moving forward as a school and as a community. Student voice is integral for growth, and allows for us, as students to have an active role in shaping our education.”
