Wonderful Boarding Initiative To Help Most Vulnerable
A wonderful story from our Boarding community. At a time when the girls could be feeling quite powerless, our Year 10 Boarding students have resolved to try and help groups in Perth who are particularly vulnerable at this time.
Every evening after dinner, boarders are expertly packaging up excess food for distribution by Ruah. Ruah Community Services is a Western Australian organisation that has been working to empower disadvantaged people for 60 years. There are three arms to their organisation: Housing and Homelessness, Mental Health and Wellness and Family Services. The boarders’ meals will go to women in refuges who have escaped domestic violence, and to people who are homeless.
The boarding students have learnt about packaging and reheating regulations with Year 10 Dean of Students, Rosa Speranza. Rosa says, “Being away from home in these strange times can be unsettling for boarders. This project has given them a sense of purpose.”
In collaboration with the catering staff, our girls have packaged and labelled 80 meals a week. The meals are collected on Fridays for distribution. This terrific initiative will continue beyond our current circumstances.
The Value of Student Voice – Jennifer Oaten
“At Santa Maria College, we are not only given the opportunity, but we are encouraged by our teachers and each other to voice our opinions, concerns and ideas—to continue moving forward as a school and as a community. Student voice is integral for growth, and allows for us, as students to have an active role in shaping our education.”
