Learning to Juggle
In Active Adventures, the girls have been learning to juggle and make their own juggling balls.
Active Adventures is a fun-filled, skills-based unit for Year 6 students. The unit is designed to expose students to a wide variety of recreational activities and outdoor pursuits. The emphasis is on skill development, participation, teamwork, leadership and cooperation.
Through this unit, the girls spent lessons learning to juggle, progressing their skills to make the juggling easier and harder. The girls then went on to make their own juggling balls, following instructions and working together to help each other make three juggling balls each. They will now be able to continue to develop these skills at home.
If you’d like to make your own juggling balls, here are the instructions.
Here’s what some of the girls had to say.
“It was one of the most fun lessons I have had because it was interactive. Juggling was a surprisingly good exercise, especially when you are learning.” Elizabeth Harris
“Learning to juggle was a new experience, because it gave us a new challenge to achieve and it was extra fun learning with friends.” Hannah Hepton
“Juggling was fun because I had always wanted to learn to juggle and, then making the juggling balls gave me something to practice with at home and helped me get better…making the juggling balls was great fun, being able to choose what colours the balls were was fun.” Niamh Jones
“I found juggling quite hard and almost impossible at first, but once I got the hang of it, it was really quite fun. Getting to make the juggling balls and having something to take home and practice was really good.” Valentina Daniele
The Value of Student Voice – Jennifer Oaten
“At Santa Maria College, we are not only given the opportunity, but we are encouraged by our teachers and each other to voice our opinions, concerns and ideas—to continue moving forward as a school and as a community. Student voice is integral for growth, and allows for us, as students to have an active role in shaping our education.”
