Year 10 Geographers: Planning Our Coastline
It is widely known that when studying, it’s important to get a hands-on understanding of your subject and how the theory you learn applies to real-life situations.Â
As part of their study of coastal management strategies and how they are being implemented locally and globally, our Year 10 geographers spent last Friday in the field, examining a variety of settings along Perth’s foreshore.
Students learned of the various stakeholder groups involved in decision-making, especially at Hillary’s, Scarborough, Cottesloe and Port Beach.
With an emphasis on the role of town planning, the girls looked at the different policies and strategies currently in place and how they can ensure the sustainability of the coastline, environmentally, economically and socially.
This included projections of sea-level rise, the use of soft and hard engineering and current debates over several residential developments planned for Scarborough and Cottesloe.
Being such a hot day, it was also an opportunity to learn the importance of a sea breeze!
It is always great to see the girls take their learning beyond the classroom and into the real world!
The Value of Student Voice – Jennifer Oaten
“At Santa Maria College, we are not only given the opportunity, but we are encouraged by our teachers and each other to voice our opinions, concerns and ideas—to continue moving forward as a school and as a community. Student voice is integral for growth, and allows for us, as students to have an active role in shaping our education.”
