Supporting Causes: Girls4Girls Day 2023

Our incredible Student Leadership Council took charge on Thursday’s Girls4Girls Day, selling some delicious sweets during recess. But it wasn’t just about satisfying our sweet tooth – it was all for a fantastic cause! The girls raised funds for Mercy Works and Share the Dignity, supporting women’s access to education, employment, and health. By supporting these causes, our students are actively empowering women who are less fortunate.

A Day of Gratitude and Empowerment

Girls4Girls Day is an annual event where we come together in gratitude and recognise the wonderful educational opportunities that we are fortunate to have. It’s a day to appreciate the privilege of education and extend our support to other girls and women, both locally and internationally. By raising funds to support access to education, employment, and health, we actively contribute to empowering those who are less privileged.

Warm Colours and Heartwarming Contributions

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the day, our 2023 dress theme was warm colours. Students were encouraged to dress in shades of pink, red, orange, and yellow. The girls enthusiastically embraced the theme, spreading colour, warmth and positivity throughout the school. This visual representation of unity further highlighted our collective commitment to making a difference.

Supporting Mercy Works

Mercy Works is an organisation that focuses on making a lasting impact both locally and internationally. Locally, they support refugees and asylum seekers, providing them with necessary resources and assistance. Internationally, Mercy Works works with the village of Kunga in Papua New Guinea, offering literacy training, health programs, senior teachers’ training, non-violence training, and even a remote girls’ hostel. By raising funds for Mercy Works, our students contribute to building a brighter future for those in need.

Contributing to Share The Dignity

Share The Dignity is a charity that aims to make a real difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or facing tough situations. They distribute period products to women and girls in need, ensuring their dignity and wellbeing are respected. Our students went the extra mile by bringing in period products, showing their compassion and support for this essential cause.

The Dedication of the Student Leadership Council

Congratulations to the Student Leadership Council for their dedication and generosity. Their hard work and enthusiasm were evident throughout Girls4Girls Day. From organising the event to selling sweets, cooking the sausage sizzle and encouraging their fellow students to contribute, they led by example and inspired others to get involved. Their commitment to empowering women and supporting important causes deserves applause.

Creating Positive Change

Girls4Girls Day 2023 has been a tremendous success, showcasing the power of unity and compassion. Through their contributions and efforts, our students have made a positive impact on the lives of women and girls in need. By raising funds for Mercy Works and Share The Dignity, we have taken meaningful steps towards creating a more equitable society.

The Value of Student Voice – Jennifer Oaten

“At Santa Maria College, we are not only given the opportunity, but we are encouraged by our teachers and each other to voice our opinions, concerns and ideas—to continue moving forward as a school and as a community. Student voice is integral for growth, and allows for us, as students to have an active role in shaping our education.”
