Georgie Shares Her Gold Winning Adventure
On the back of her gold medal win at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Fast5 Netball, we caught up with Year 12 student and our 2023 Sports Captain Georgie Cleaver to hear about her adventure.
Where was the Youth Commonwealth Games held?
The Games were held in Trinidad and Tobago. First, we attended a staging camp held in Sydney to meet the team and train. We then stopped over in San Francisco, then Texas for one night before two more flights to Tobago.
What was a typical day like for you?
I usually got up around 7.00 am and headed to breakfast in the dining hall with the other athletes. Then, we did some light mobility and stretching, along with a team walk. We then had a bit of downtime before our game, where we could get to know other athletes from different countries, hang around in the athlete village, or we might have a number of team meetings. Then we got ready for our game, which was usually in the afternoon. This would involve being escorted to the courts by police. We would get to see our families after the game for a quick hug and photo. After the game, once back at the hotel, we would complete our pool recovery and mobility, then pop back into the dining hall for dinner, followed by another team meeting and into bed by 10.00 pm.
What was the highlight for you?
My highlight was definitely winning gold with such an incredible group of girls. Knowing that all our hard work paid off and topping off the most amazing experience with a gold medal was an unreal feeling.
Were you in another competition after the Commonwealth Games?
Yes, after the Youth Commonwealth Games, I had another netball competition in Brisbane, where I played in the Australian Netball Championship for Fever Reserves. We ended up coming fourth overall, losing the bronze medal match on the last day. This competition lasted for eight days.
Do you have any future goals around sport?
I hope to get drafted in December this year to an AFLW list. Then, eventually, get an SSN (Suncorp Super Netball) contract and, in the long term, play for Diamonds.Â
What do you plan to do after Year 12?
I’m hoping to get drafted for AFLW, so that will be my main focus while seeing what opportunities open up in the netball space. I also want to study Radiography at Curtin, so I will probably do that part-time as well.
