Highlights from the 2024 IGSSA Swimming Carnival

We were excited to see the IGSSA swimming return to the traditional Friday night format in 2024. After 4 years of modified versions, we loved the atmosphere that the evening event with spectators created. I think the athletes were blown away by the energy of the crowd and the sense of occasion that was created.

Our swimmers have been training hard since Term 4, 2023, and the early mornings have certainly been made easier since the installation of pool heating over the summer, although some would argue it’s now too hot. We love the way our swimmers support each other at training and often enjoy breakfast together after a tough session. This support created a wonderfully positive team environment throughout the season and was in full force on competition night, which was fantastic to see.  Our new swimming blocks arrived towards the end of the season, so our team was able to refine their explosive starts in preparation for IGSSA.

Despite missing several strong swimmers for the event out team came a commendable 6th overall. However, the points were incredibly tight with only one point between some year group pennants and the overall rankings being exceptionally close. A special mention must go to our incredible Year 10 group who came second in their year group pennant.

Whilst there were lots of exceptional swims on the evening we were so pleased to see our swimmers excel in the relay events. This really epitomised our theme for the season to swim for each other. We thank our team of hard-working and passionate coaches, Luke, Bianca, Claudia, Jarett and Kiara. We love that our coaching team is not only connected to the College in a coaching capacity but also as alumni or with sisters who are alumni.

Finally, we must congratulate our Year 12 swimmers. This year group have been the backbone of our swimming program for the last six years. They bring passion, enthusiasm and incredible talent to our squad and will be greatly missed. A few of them finish their IGSSA careers with an IGSSA record, which is a significant accomplishment.

We are so proud of the energy and efforts that our team have put into the 2024 season and can’t wait to see them go bigger and better in 2025!

The average person’s attention span when using a digital device has plummeted from around two and a half minutes back in 2004 to just 47 seconds on average today – a dramatic 66% decrease over the past two decades.
